Urban Shelter Hires Vice President Finance To Tighten Reins

We were hired by our client after an existing senior financial manager was unable to oversee and implement initiatives to bring administrative costs under control. We were asked to conduct a highly discreet search within the NFP community to identify and attract a financial leader with the proven ability to align resources with donor expectations.

Every NFP strives to find that special balance that tells the donor that their money is being spent as wisely and with the highest degree of consideration to make every penny count toward the expected impact. Our client, an urban shelter, had hit a wall at the 25% administrative cost through years of status-quo thinking, and didn’t have the financial leadership to drive past it. Donors were beginning to question the integrity of the organizations mandate and demand that changes be made to assure them that their money was going where it was expected to go.

We conducted a search focused primarily in the GTA and looked outside the industry for individuals willing to transition into the Not-For-Profit space, with sound experience establishing and managing cost controls and the internal communication and leadership required to pull it off. We were successful in delivering a short-list that greatly exceeded the client’s expectation a candidate was selected and able to start within a 12 week window.

The organization finally got to a 8/9% admin cost/year, and the donor base began to grow as they were able to leverage this achievement and word of mouth spread.
